The orthography of the Old Norse language was diverse, being written in both Runic and Latin alphabets, with many spelling conventions, variant letterforms, and unique letters and signs. In modern times, scholars established a standardized spelling for the language. When Old Norse names are used in texts in other languages, modifications to this spelling are often made.
In particular, the names of Old Norse mythological figures often have several different spellings. Rune stones created near the end of the Viking Age tend to have a greater influence from Old English runes. An understanding of the writing system of Old Norse is crucial for fully understanding the Old Norse language.
Studies of remaining rune stones from the Viking Age reveal many nuances about the spoken language, such as the constant use of alliteration. A comparison of various whetstones from this time period with the works of Snorri Sturluson reveal that alliteration was common in many Old Norse writings, and were not only present in skaldic works.
This would then suggest that the Vikings closely tied their language to their auditory sense, which in turn would have helped with the continual transfer of their cultural memory, which was also closely tied to their language. The following table gives various attested spellings of sounds and their IPA transcription. In general usage, an orthographic distinction of phones or phonemes is not necessarily held by every writer.
For example, an author may only distinguish some vowels by length, and orthographic devices could be mixed and matched. Likewise, a phonetic entry only lists spellings not used by the equivalent phoneme s. When dialectal mergers such as OEN monophthongization took place, regional spelling often changed to reflect this.
Sometimes, both phonemes' spellings would be used, but confused. The epenthetic vowel had different regional spellings. The original Icelandic manuscriptswhich are the main source of knowledge of Norse mythologydid not employ a unified system of spelling.
During the Viking Age, many dialects of Old Norse were spoken. While they appear to have been mutually intelligible, the slight variances resulted in various spelling. In particular, the length of vowels was only sporadically marked in many manuscripts and various umlauted vowels were often not distinguished from others.

Another complication is that several shortcut forms for common words, syllables, and grammatical endings developed. Another is the use of a special glyph for the various r-endings so common in Old Norse. These scribal abbreviations are categorized as follows: .
These abbreviation conventions and a majority of the signs are inherited from the Latin language itself, and were common to the Latin alphabet in other languages. However, other signs or conventions are specifically Norse, such as the er zig-zag. With normalized spelling, the manuscript spelling is altered to adhere to be more strict and regular. These respellings are designed to be phonemically precise rather than representative of the manuscripts. In Norse lore, the god, Odin, impaled his heart with his own spear and hung on the world tree, Yggdrasil, for nine days and nights all to perceive the meaning of the runes.
The runes were symbols that sprang from the Well of Urd — the source of fate — and the Norns used these runes to carry that fate up the trunk and branches of Yggdrasil to the nine worlds amidst its boughs. Odin made his sacrifice at great anguish and risk to himself because he knew that the runes conveyed deep meaning, and if he could understand their meaning he would gain profound wisdom and power.
So we see from this story how the Vikings thought of runes not merely as letters but as having potent virtues within themselves of a metaphysical or even magical nature. The Norse and other Germanic peoples wrote with runes since at least the first century. However, they did not use this writing the way we do now, or even the way Mediterranean and other neighboring cultures did then.Ks47 lower
Instead, runes were for inscriptions of great importance. They could be carved into rune stones to commemorate ancestors and mark the graves of heroes. Because they had inherent meaning, they could be used as a means of communication between the natural and supernatural, and could thus be used as spells for protection or success.
It is obvious to see how many of these runes were an influence on our English letters used today, such as the T, O, F and S seen in these pendants. Carved on sticks or other objects, they could be cast and deciphered to discern the present or predict the future.
Rather than being penned on vellum or parchment, runes were usually carved on wood, bone, or stone, hence their angular appearance. While evidence suggests that most Vikings could read the runes on at least a basic level, for them the true study and understanding of these symbols was a pursuit fit for the gods.
Our word alphabet comes from the Greek letters alpha and beta.

Some of the raised runestones first appear in the fourth and fifth century in Norway and Sweden. And in Denmark as early as the eighth and ninth century. Elder Futhark has 24 runes, and over the next few centuries became widely used amongst the many Germanic tribes that vied for survival throughout Europe.
The Younger Futhark has only 16 runes, not because the language was becoming simpler but because it was becoming more complicated. Phonetically, the runes of the Younger Futhark were working double-duty to cover the changes that were differentiating the Norse tongues from that of other Germanic peoples.
The explosion of trade and interaction brought about by the Viking Age created an increased need for writing and literacy, thus archaeologists have cataloged thousands of inscriptions in Younger Futhark while we only have hundreds in Elder Futhark. Of course, the Vikings also left runic graffiti from Orkney to Constantinople and beyond as they pushed the boundaries of their world ever-further. The following tables offer a quick and basic introduction to the runes used by the Vikings and their ancestors.
These charts should serve for those looking to transliterate their names or other epitaphs or to find known associations with particular meanings.
Many books and other resources are available for deeper inquiry, but there is much about runes that is not known. Indeed, they are more mysterious now than they ever have been, but in words ascribed to Odin, when one understands the meanings of the runes they may find.

Now if we are to spell it in the Elder Futhark runes, we have to look deeper into what spelling is and have a look at the following facts:. The ideal alphabet has a separate symbol letter or rune for each sound the language has.Tecno m8 firmware
The Elder Futhark runic alphabet was such an ideal system: there are as many Elder Futhark runes as there were sounds in the Proto-Norse language, for which they were developed. Roman letters used to transcribe the English language today do not constitute an ideal alphabet. Several sounds have a look at the IPA chart of English do not have letters of their own.
The Phonological system sound system of the Proto-Norse language was not the same as in modern English. It had sounds that do not exist in English. If we try to use the Elder Futhark runes phonetically, that is substituting runes for the sounds we hear, the way runes were supposed to be used, we will fail, because there are not enough runes for all the English sounds.
So the solution is to keep modern English spelling. It is true that ancient rune carvers did not use it. Should they have to, they would invent a way to do so. Even though keeping the English orthography eliminates the most of the problems, some still remain.
First, there are 26 Roman letters in the English alphabet and only 24 runes in the Elder Futhark. Below is a table of letters and their runic counterparts, showing how all this can be resolved:. Note that this way to collate letters and runes is not canonical. It is based on my own understanding of phonology and orthography.
There has been no social contract concluded to this effect, either. An algorithm based on this table is behind the rune converter that I developed. You may see other tables of counterparts on the Internet that suggest different solutions.Tasmota buttontopic
Keep in mind that you may also find phonetic explanations of runes, which were not compiled as a help for those who want to write a name in runic symbols.
In such cases as my earlier post the counterparts denote the letters used to transcribe ancient runic inscriptions. The Younger Futhark runic alphabet has only 16 runes.
It uses one and the same rune for such pairs as [p] and [b], [t] and [d], [k] and [g]. So before any permanent use I would strongly advise to check for all possible readings of the resulting Younger Futhark rune sequence. Note that there is only one rune for [u] and [o], too. The table for the Younger Futhark runes is as follows:. The appearance of runes in the charts above is not the only possible one. There have been many variants of runes depending on geographical area and historical period.
For instance, beside the so called long branch Younger Futhark, pictured above, there was a short twig variant as well. Later it was transformed into the so called medieval runes. Note that the principles set up in this article are apllicable not only to names, but to any word, phrase or text in English as well however, not to Old Norse texts.
